Jun. 01, 2018

Dear HSHMC Families,

We wanted to share some positive news with you. County Health has shared that they are making significant progress clearing the building for us. They hope to run final tests this weekend. In other words, we do expect to be back in school as early as Tuesday. If they do clear the building this weekend, we will need Monday to straighten up and prepare for our reopening. Therefore, as of now, we will remain closed on Monday June 4 and will confirm with you as soon as possible about our plans to reopen on June 5th.

Although we are closed on Monday, the following will still continue:

  • The Cuyamaca College Communications Class will be held at our ISP location beginning at 8:30 am. The address is 4283 El Cajon Blvd. Suite 230.
  • ISP students will be in session at the ISP location from 12:30 – 4:00 pm
  • Students going to 6th Grade Camp will meet at HSHMC at 7:45 am out front at the brown tables to depart by bus.
  • Seniors going on the Senior Camping Trip will meet at HSHMC at 9:00 am out front at the brown tables to depart to camp.
  • We will hold Saturday School at HSHMC Saturday, June 2 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, on the first floor only.

Thank you for your understanding, support and flexibility during this most unusual time. We look forward to seeing you all soon!

School Closure Update

May. 31, 2018

We wanted to provide you an update of our mercury contamination cleanup efforts.

We worked through the night with health professionals from the city and county to first ensure every step is being taken in consideration of the health and safety of every student. The good news is the health officials have concluded that the contamination threat did not spread beyond the school. The health teams went to the homes of several staff and students who we knew had come into contact with the mercury and found their homes to be safe and clean. One student's clothes registered a small amount of residue that did not register on her or any other area of the house. The way to best clean those clothes is to simply put them outside in an open plastic bag for a day or two and then launder.

We advise you to take three precautions:

1) Ask your child if they actually touched the mercury or attempted to clean it up. We want to advise county health and check up on these kids right away. You can also choose to contact your own health care professionals. Take care to identify clothing and place them in an open bag outside and put their shoes in a separate bag. Then wash your hands thoroughly. Also if you child used or moved the blood pressure machine, take the same precautions.

2) As a super precaution any of you may choose to identify clothing worn the last couple days at school place them in a plastic bag and put them outside to air out for a few days before laundering them. Please know that the blood pressure device that leaked was on the second floor only and that is where the major clean up efforts will be concentrated. Please also know, that the city and county health professionals feel the contamination concerns have been contained to the school and even the students who we know were exposed have been checked and cleared. If your child did come into contact with the mercury or blood pressure device give us a call so we can take proper precautions.

Cleaning the building is a lengthy and costly task. We have contracted with a professional and certified company especially equipped to remove all traces of contaminants from the school. At this point they believe clean up efforts will go on through the weekend. Therefore school will be closed Friday June 1 and we will let you know our plans for next week based on the progress of the clean up.

1) If your child is in the college biology class, class will be held Friday at our ISP location. Their attendance is required.

College biology class will be meeting at 4283 El Cajon Blvd., Suite 230 at 8:00 am. The bus to Cuyamaca for the afternoon class will leave from that location as well at 12:15 pm. Remember, they should study for their final and be ready!

2) The school campus will be closed this weekend.

3) Students taking the SAT on Saturday will still be meeting outside of school to catch the bus at 6:45 am to go to Patrick Henry and will return for pick up at 12:30 pm.

School Closed Thursday May 31

May. 30, 2018

Dear HSHMC Families, After school today, we discovered that the blood pressure machine we use for demonstration purposes had leaked some amount of mercury. Since safety is our first concern we immediately contacted the San Diego Fire Department who sent out their hazardous materials team. The fire department hazardous materials division detected mercury levels on the carpets and that a major building cleanup will need to occur. Thankfully they did not detect dangerous respiratory health levels. However, we will take no risks and expect that the Public Health Department will take all necessary steps to insure the contamination is not spread further. This may mean that the Health Department will visit some of your homes to make sure there are no levels of mercury there. They will be meeting with us later and we will share more details with you then. In the meantime, we plan on closing the school tomorrow to begin the clean-up process. We will let you know if it is necessary to close the school Friday. Once again, your child's health and safety is our number one concern and our plan is to be over cautious to insure that the building is completely clean before we resume classes. We want to repeat that at this point the Fire Department Hazmat team has not given us any reason to believe your child's health has been compromised.

Students in our ISP independent studies program will still have school tomorrow at the El Cajon Blvd location.

Closing tomorrow will also mean that our Symposium will be cancelled as well. We hope to make plans to reschedule for another date.
