Weekly Principal Bulletin

Our middle school students have been reading A Wrinkle in Time as part of their literacy unit. Tomorrow morning, they will be going on a field study to see the movie. They will be comparing and contrasting the book and the movie and doing a character analysis.

We hope you will join us for Family Art and Literacy night on April 5 at 5:30 pm. We are planning a night of food, fun and family while creating art and sharing literacy together!

Spring Break is next week, March 26-30. School will resume on Monday, April 2.

Our next Saturday School is scheduled for Saturday, April 14 from 8:00 to 12:00 pm. Attendance is mandatory for those students with 5 or more absences. Saturday school is also open to any student who wants to attend to clear absences and incompletes.

We have another blood drive this week on Tuesday March 6 between 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. If you are interested in donating, please stop by. Given the number of students that have signed up to donate, we anticipate a very successful drive.

Family Math Night is this Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 pm for both MS and HS families. We hope you will come join us for food, games, and math fun. Please RSVP through our website at www.hshmc.org or by calling the school at 619-528-9070 so we know how much food to prepare.

All 8th, 9th, and 10th graders will be taking the PSAT this Thursday. Taking the PSAT for practice gives our students a feel for the test before taking the PSAT in 11th grade for the National Merit Scholarship competition, and prior to taking the SAT for college admission.

Our Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Fundraiser: Pennies for Patients campaign has been extended through the end of March. HSHMC's goal is to raise $1,200 dollars. Please consider sending in your loose change or making a donation to help support this very important cause. Monies are being collected in 4th period classes each day.

We are holding Saturday School again this Saturday, March 10 from 8:00 to 12:00 pm. Contracts were mailed home and handed out to students required to attend. Attendance is mandatory for those students with 5 or more absences. Saturday school is also open to any student who wants to attend to clear absences and incompletes.

A notice is being sent home today with students interested in going to the Opera, Florence In il Amezonas, with HSHMC on March 15th at the San Diego Civic Center. We have a limited number of tickets that will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. If your student is interested and did not get the information, please have them see Mr. Kennedy in the Student Union.

Track and Field season has begun. If students need more info or a medical packet, please have them see Mr. Kennedy, or come to the front desk.

If you are a parent of a senior, please remember that senior dues of $85.00 was due by January 26. If you have not already taken care of this, please do so now.

ASB is still selling Valentine grams for $1 each during lunch and after school. The proceeds will go towards our spring dance and end of the year activities. The Valentine grams will be passed out on Wednesday.

Our Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will begin on Tuesday, February 20 and will continue through March 2. HSHMC's goal is to raise $1,200 dollars. Please consider sending in your loose change or making a donation to help support this very important cause.

Students interested in participating in track and field this year are invited to a meeting on Thursday during lunch in Room 205.

As a reminder, there is no school this Friday, February 16 or Monday, February 19, in honor of Presidents Day.

Internships resumed today at Sharp. Please remind your students to wear their scrubs this week if they are enrolled in a hospital internship.

The MS has two new clubs starting after school this week. A writing club on Tuesdays and a Spanish club on Thursdays – both begin at 4:30 pm. Please encourage your middle school student to consider joining one or both of these clubs.

We were excited to celebrate our students as they arrived this morning to music and cheer, welcoming them to the first day of our second semester. Ask your high schoolers about their new schedule of classes.

Our next parent advisory meeting is this Thursday, February 1 at 5:30 pm. If you haven't already, please consider joining this wonderful group of dedicated parents helping to make HSHMC the best school in the universe. I would love to see you Thursday evening.

As a reminder, our current 8th grade students must submit an application for the high school prior to the January 31 deadline to be considered in the current application pool for the 2018-2019 school year.

We are pleased to announce our school has received the national "GOLD" Schools of Opportunity recognition from the National Education Policy Center based at the University of Colorado. Our school is being honored for engaging in practices that build on our students' strengths and create supported learning opportunities for all students. Please join me in thanking our students, staff, and faculty who make this place a wonderful place to work and learn! And thank you, everyone, for making a difference for all of our students.

The Middle School will be holding Parent-Student-Teacher conferences again this week. Students will be released at 12:30 pm this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Our afterschool program will still be available until 6:00 pm for those who choose to stay. If you have not already been scheduled for a conference, please contact Ms. Cynthia at the front desk.

Finals for the high school are this Thursday and Friday. Both days are minimum days with dismissal at 12:30 pm.

Tuesday at 5:30 pm is a new student orientation for families interested in applying for next year. If you know other families who are interested in applying to HSHMC for the 2018-2019 school year, please invite them to attend and remind them that our application period closes on January 31.
